Why Does My Pet Need a Wellness Exam Every Year?

Your dog is still wagging their tail, chasing their favorite toy, and greeting you at the door. Your cat is eating well, finding the sunniest spot in the house, and acting like their usual self.

Everything seems perfectly normal. So, do they really need to see the veterinarian every year?

It’s a great question, and one we understand!

The truth is, wellness exams aren’t just about finding problems. They’re about helping your pet stay healthy and happy for as long as possible.

At Riverside Vet, we believe some of the best veterinary care starts with simply getting to know your pet. Their personality, their little quirks, what makes them nervous, and what makes their tail wag. The more we get to know them, the better we can recognize when something changes.

Annual wellness visits give us a chance to build that relationship, check in on your pet’s health, and talk through any questions you might have. Even when everything seems just fine at home.

What Happens During a Pet Wellness Exam?

Think of your pet’s wellness exam as a chance for us to check in on how they’re doing, from nose to tail.

Every pet is different, so we tailor our approach to their age, lifestyle, and individual needs. But there are a few important things we typically look at during a visit.

  1. A Nose-to-Tail Physical Exam

We start by giving your pet a thorough physical examination. We’re looking at how their body is functioning, checking for changes, and getting a better understanding of their overall health.

Here’s some of what we check:

  • Eyes and ears: Looking for redness, irritation, discharge, or anything out of the ordinary.
  • Teeth and gums: Checking for tartar, inflammation, broken teeth, and other signs of dental disease.
  • Heart and lungs: Listening to their heartbeat and breathing.
  • Skin and coat: Looking for lumps, bumps, irritation, hair loss, or signs of parasites.
  • Abdomen: Gently feeling for anything unusual or uncomfortable.
  • Joints and movement: Checking for stiffness, discomfort, or changes in mobility.
  • Weight and body condition: Making sure your pet is maintaining a healthy weight and muscle condition.

These checks help us understand how your pet is doing today. And because we get to see them over time, we can compare what we’re finding now with what we’ve seen during previous visits.

Sometimes, it’s those little changes that tell us the most.

  1. A Conversation About Life at Home

Here’s something we want every pet owner to know: You know your pet better than anyone.

You know how excited your dog gets when you pick up the leash. You know your cat’s favorite hiding spot. And you’re often the first to notice when something feels a little different.

Maybe your dog is taking a little longer to get up after a nap. Maybe your cat isn’t jumping onto the couch as often. Or perhaps you’ve noticed your pet drinking more water than usual.

Those observations matter.

During a wellness visit, we’ll ask about things like your pet’s appetite, energy, behavior, bathroom habits, diet, and daily routines.

And we want you to ask questions, too!

Wondering if your pet’s food is still the best choice? Noticed something unusual but aren’t sure whether it’s important? Curious about changes that come with getting older?

We’re here to talk it through with you.

You never have to worry about asking the wrong question or feeling silly for bringing something up. We’d much rather have a conversation and help you feel confident about your pet’s care.

  1. Vaccines and Parasite Prevention

Preventive care is another important part of keeping your pet healthy.

During your visit, we’ll review things like vaccinations, heartworm prevention, flea and tick protection, and intestinal parasite testing.

But here’s the thing: not every pet needs exactly the same plan.

A dog who loves exploring the outdoors may have different needs than a cat who spends their days lounging inside. And a playful puppy has different needs than a senior pet enjoying a slower pace of life.

That’s why we take the time to understand your pet’s lifestyle and health history before making recommendations.

Our goal isn’t to recommend everything to everyone. It’s to help you understand which preventive care options make sense for your pet and why.

  1. Screening Tests When They’re Helpful

Sometimes, there’s more going on beneath the surface than we can see during a physical exam.

That’s where screening tests, such as bloodwork, urine testing, or fecal testing, can help us get a clearer picture of your pet’s health.

For example, some kidney conditions and other health concerns can begin developing before pets show obvious symptoms. Screening tests may help us identify changes earlier or establish a baseline we can compare against in the future.

Does every pet need every test at every visit? Not necessarily.

We’ll consider your pet’s age, medical history, and exam findings, then explain which tests may be helpful and what information they can provide.

We believe you should always understand the why behind a recommendation. That way, we can make thoughtful decisions about your pet’s care together.

Can a Wellness Exam Catch Health Problems Early?

Sometimes, yes! And that’s one of the biggest benefits of regular veterinary visits.

Pets have a way of making everything seem just fine, even when something isn’t quite right.

Cats are especially good at hiding signs of illness. And many dogs will happily greet you at the door or chase their favorite ball even when they’re experiencing subtle health changes.

Things like increased thirst, gradual weight loss, bad breath, or a little stiffness after resting can be easy to miss or chalk up to getting older.

During a wellness exam, we’re looking for those small clues.

Of course, no exam can catch every health problem, and some conditions develop between visits. But seeing your pet regularly gives us more opportunities to recognize changes, ask questions, and recommend further testing when it’s needed.

And if everything looks great?

That’s wonderful news, too!

A healthy wellness visit gives us valuable information about what’s normal for your pet, so we have something to compare against as they grow and age.

Why Annual Wellness Exams Matter, Even When Your Pet Seems Healthy

It’s natural to think about calling the veterinarian when your pet isn’t feeling well.

But some of the most valuable visits happen when they’re feeling perfectly fine.

Here’s why:

We get to know what’s normal for your pet.

Every pet has their own version of normal. Regular visits help us become familiar with your pet’s health, behavior, weight, and medical history, making it easier to notice changes over time.

There’s time to talk about the little things.

Maybe you’ve been wondering about your dog’s weight or your cat’s eating habits. A wellness visit is a great opportunity to bring up those questions before they turn into bigger concerns.

We can adjust their care as life changes.

The care your pet needs at two years old may look different from what they need at ten. Regular visits help us make adjustments as they move through different stages of life.

We’re building a relationship, not just a medical record.

This is something we really value at Riverside Vet.

The more we get to know your pet and your family, the better we can understand your goals, answer your questions, and offer guidance that feels right for you.

We want you to feel comfortable calling us when something seems off, asking questions when you’re unsure, and knowing you have a team you can trust.

Because great veterinary care isn’t just about what happens during an appointment. It’s about having someone in your corner throughout your pet’s life.

Does My Pet Really Need an Exam Every Year?

For most healthy adult dogs and cats, we generally recommend a wellness exam at least once a year.

But just like people, pets have different needs depending on their age and health.

Puppies and kittens typically need several visits during their first year as they grow, develop, and receive their initial vaccinations and preventive care.

Healthy adult pets generally benefit from annual wellness exams to monitor their health and keep preventive care up to date.

Senior pets may benefit from visits every six months, since health changes can happen more quickly as they age.

Pets with ongoing medical conditions may need more frequent check-ins so we can monitor their health and adjust treatment when needed.

There’s no one-size-fits-all schedule, and that’s okay.

We’ll help you figure out what makes sense for your pet based on their individual needs.

And remember, you don’t have to wait until their next wellness visit if something seems wrong. If your pet develops new symptoms or you’re concerned about a change in their health, give us a call. Severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or collapse, require immediate emergency veterinary care.

How Can You Prepare for Your Pet’s Wellness Exam?

You don’t need to do anything fancy before your pet’s appointment.

But a little preparation can help us make the most of our time together.

Before your visit, think about whether you’ve noticed any changes in your pet’s daily routine.

A few things you might want to jot down include:

  • Changes in appetite, thirst, energy, or behavior.
  • Questions about food, treats, exercise, or weight.
  • Any new lumps, bumps, itching, or skin concerns.
  • Changes in mobility, such as stiffness or difficulty jumping.
  • Questions about medications, supplements, or parasite prevention.
  • Anything else that’s been on your mind.

If you’ve noticed something that comes and goes, like an occasional limp or an unusual behavior, a quick video on your phone can be really helpful.

And please don’t feel like you need to have all the answers before you arrive.

That’s what we’re here for!

We want your visit to feel like a conversation, not a test. You’re bringing your knowledge of your pet, and we’re bringing our medical experience. Together, we can figure out the best next steps.

The Value of Having a Veterinarian Who Knows Your Pet

There’s something special about walking into a veterinary hospital where the team remembers your pet.

Not just their name or what’s written in their chart, but the little things that make them who they are.

Maybe your dog needs a little extra time to feel comfortable. Maybe your cat has a very strong opinion about being examined. Or maybe your pet is the kind who happily accepts attention from everyone they meet.

Those details matter to us.

And over time, so does the relationship we build with you.

When we know your pet’s history, their personality, and what’s normal for them, we have a better foundation for making medical recommendations. When we understand your concerns and priorities, we can communicate more clearly and help you make decisions with confidence.

That’s one of the reasons we believe regular wellness visits are so valuable.

They’re not just appointments on a calendar. They’re opportunities to build trust, celebrate the good things, and work together to help your pet live a healthy, happy life.

We’re Here for Every Stage of Your Pet’s Life
